Downtown Columbia affords its residents an amenity-rich lifestyle. Dining and shopping opportunities are within easy walking distance, as is one of the top concert venues in the country, the acclaimed Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Numerous residential opportunities are now available in Downtown Columbia. The Metropolitan Downtown Columbia offers 380 luxury apartments and street-level retail shops. The building includes an exceptional amenity package – clubhouse, fitness center, resort-style pool and a public promenade with interactive sculpture and play elements.

An additional two residential buildings, adjacent to The Metropolitan and The Mall in Columbia, have added a combined 437 new apartment residences, with additional street-level shopping and eateries. TEN.M and m.flats offer studio to three-bedroom up-scale units. Both buildings feature a wide range of amenities including fitness centers, stunning pools and outdoor entertainment space.

The Downtown Columbia Plan calls for “a full spectrum of housing” to continue the original vision of Columbia as an inclusive community and to respond to the housing needs of the Downtown Columbia workforce. Plans for Affordable Housing in Downtown Columbia were approved by the Howard County Council in November 2016.

Under construction in the new Merriweather District, adjacent to the Pavilion, is another new market-rate apartment complex that will include Downtown’s first affordable units. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2019.

Downtown Columbia is an economic hub for the region. Corporate headquarters and new businesses are attracted to the amenities for their employees—a critical mass of retail, restaurants, and entertainment–as well as the ideal location in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Columbia also has access to some of the best schools in the country for their employees’ families.

Development of the Merriweather District, a multi-building employment center, is underway near Merriweather Post Pavilion and Symphony Woods Park. It will be a vibrant, walkable, mixed-use environment including shops, restaurants, apartments, structured parking and parkland in addition to an important employment center for the region.

Currently under construction in the Merriweather District is the third new office building that will contain the new corporate headquarters for Tenable, the world’s fastest growing cyber security company. Tenable will occupy seven floors in 150,000-square-feet of space in the 350,000-square-foot signature building. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2019.

Also in the Merriweather District is One Merriweather, a 220,000-square-foot building that opened as the home of MedStar Health’s new, expanded headquarters. MedStar Health is the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in Maryland. The building is located on the corner of Little Patuxent and Broken Land Parkways and includes a fitness center, an upscale restaurant, Cured and its adjacent speakeasy 18th & 21st, in addition to a 1,200-space parking garage. One Merriweather was the first new office building in Downtown Columbia in 15 years.

Two Merriweather, an approximately 125,000-square-foot office building adjacent to One Merriweather, contains the regional headquarters of Pearson Education, an online and blended education company. Additional street level retail and a boardwalk over an elaborately designed environmental area offer additional amenities and outdoor spaces for the tenants of both One and Two Merriweather.

Downtown Columbia is the home of Merriweather Post Pavilion, which Rolling Stone magazine ranked as one of the best outdoor concert venues in the country. The pavilion is undergoing a $55 million expansion and renovation as part of the redevelopment of Downtown Columbia.

Other cultural amenities are being planned for the adjacent Symphony Woods Park, home of popular festivals and fairs, and for public art displays throughout Downtown.

The Chrysalis, an outdoors performing arts venue, opened in Symphony Woods Park in April 2017 and hosts a multitude of events throughout the year including OPUS 1, a music, art, light and sound festival, the Downtown Columbia Mini Maker Faire and an assortment of community concerts and activities for all ages.

Adjacent to Merriweather Post Pavilion, the Merriweather District’s first restaurant opened in 2018 to rave reviews. Cured, along with its Speakeasy 18th and 21st, occupy space on the street level of the One Merriweather Building.

Downtown Columbia also includes extensive pathways for walkers and bicyclists. A spa, Haven on the Lake, overlooks the lake, where families paddle boat in warm weather. In the summer months, free concerts, movies and festivals are held at the Lakefront, where some of the city’s best restaurants are located: Clyde’s, Lupa Trattoria Romana and Sushi Sono. New to the Lakefront is The Soundry, a live music venue that attracts national performing artists.

As development progresses, Downtown Columbia will become even more of a destination for dining with an array of new and unique restaurants and cafés.
